Visa requirements for non-Romanian citizens


General conditions:

  • The visa applications are accepted on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, between 9:00 - 12:00 hrs;
  • Information regarding visa application can be obtained on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, between 14:00 - 16:00 hrs, at telephone 0040 21 208 60 30 (Consular Section);
  • Payment takes place at the counter(in cash, in Euro) after acceptance of the application.
  • The applications have to be made in person.
  • Presentation of the following documents is a condition for treatment of the visa application, but is no guarantee for obtaining the visa.
  • If necessary, the Embassy may ask for further documents or information.
  • For a Schengen Visa for visiting a family member or friend, the Embassy needs the authorization of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Ministry of Justice. This takes 2-3 months.
  • Some nationalities need an Airport Transit Visa if they travel via Amsterdam Schiphol airport, even if they do not leave the international space.
  • A Schengen visa is valid for all Schengen countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands) but can only be issued by the Embassy of the country of main destination.
  • A multiple-entries visa is issued to business-people having to travel at least once a month to Holland or one of the other Schengen-countries. It must be issued by the Embassy of the country where the majority of the trips will take place; if the number of trips to several countries is equal, the visa should be issued by the Embassy of the Schengen country that will be entered first.
  • If several Schengen countries are visited during one trip and the length of the stay in each country is equal, the visa should be obtained at the Embassy of the Schengen country that will be entered first.
  • If a non-Schengen country is visited during the trip, a multiple entry visa is necessary to be able to re-enter the Schengen space. In order to obtain this, the visa for the non-Schengen country has to be presented when the application is submitted.
  • If it is needed to transit a Schengen-country in order to go to a non-Schengen country, the visa of the non-Schengen country has to be presented, as well as proof of transport with confirmed dates and destination to this country. If more Schengen-countries have to be transited, the visa-application should be made at the Embassy of the country where the Schengen-space is entered first.

Necessary documents for a Schengen visa application:

(All documents must be presented in original and photocopies)

1.   Passport:

  • valid at least 3 months after the expiry of the visa that is asked for;
  • any old, cancelled passports;

2.   Residence permit for Romania:

  • valid at least 3 months after the expiry of the visa that is asked for;

5.   Proof of  transport:

  • a return ticket reservation with confirmed dates; the original ticket can be required after submitting the application;
  • car papers, a green card and the driving license should be shown;
  • for a business car or a car belonging to a third person, a legalized authorization of the owner should be shown;
  • if a third person will drive, a declaration from the driver and a copy of his passport.

6.   Travel medical insurance:

  • valid for the whole period of the trip and the whole Schengen-space;

For a business visa:

7.   An invitation from a company in the Netherlands on official company paper:

  • just orirginal
  • the invitation must state the name of the person invited, as well as the exact dates and a description of the reason of the visit, the accommodation during the visit (hotel reservation or with referent) and the following guarantee (in Dutch or in English): "....(name of the company) guarantees all the costs for the Dutch State and other public institutions that may result during the stay of ....(the applicant's name) in the Schengen States".

, on official company paper, stating the name of the employee, his/her function in the company and the reason for the trip to the Netherlands on behalf of the company;

For visiting friends/relatives:

11.   An invitation from a private person in the Netherlands

  • in original only!
  • not older than 6 months;
  • issued and legalized by the Dutch town-hall;
  • the invitation must state the name of the person invited, the exact dates of the visit and guarantee for the stay in the Netherlands and return to the country of origin or long term residence;
* in this case, the Embassy needs the authorization of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Ministry of Justice. This takes 2-3 months.

Without an invitation:

7.   Written confirmation of a reservation by a hotel in the Netherlands;

8.   Proof of sufficient financial means

  • EUR 100,-per pierson/per day in Traveler’s cheques or an account overview for the last 3 months.

11.   Marriage certificate (if the applicant is married)

12.   The buying / lease contract of a house/apartment in Romania

13.   Professional documents :

a.   For company owners

  • statutes of the company and the Registration Certificate;
  • proof of solvability of the company or of existing business relations with the Dutch company (last balance sheet, a Certificat Constatator from the Chamber of Commerce, the original company bank statements over the last 3 months, contracts, invoices, export-import declarations etc.).

b.   For employees

  • a (less than 3 months old) legalized copy of the company statutes;
  • a letter from the employer, on official company paper, stating the name of the employee, his/her function in the company and the reason for the trip to the Netherlands on behalf of the company;
  • proof of solvability of the company or of existing business relations with the Dutch company (last balance sheet, a Certificat Constatator from the Chamber of Commerce, the original company bank statements over the last 3 months, contracts, invoices, export-import declarations etc.) (originals and photocopies).
  • vacation declaration from the employer.

c.   For students/pupils

  • student/pupil identity card, signed and stamped;
  • vacation declaration from the school.
  • for minors, written approval + copies of the passports of the parents.

Necessary documents for a transit visa application:

Transit  visas with maximum 5 days in the Netherlands (in addition to 1-10/13):

  • For transiting the territory of the Netherlands in order to enter a non-Schengen country, there must be shown the visa of the non-Schengen country as well as proof of transport with confirmed dates and destination to that country. If more Schengen-countries are transited, the visa-application should be submitted at the Embassy of the country where the Schengen-space will be entered first.

Airport Transit visa:

It is only necessary for some nationalities (for details contact the Embassy).

  • passport and residence permit for Romania (if applicable);
  • the visa for the main destination (if applicable);
  • two recent passport photos;
  • flight ticket or reservation
